The Red Devil angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare 'Red Devil') is a selectively bred variation of the freshwater angelfish, known for its deep red and orange coloration. Unlike many other angelfish varieties, this strain is line-bred to maintain its striking red color, which can radiate across its body. Red Devil angelfish are often confused with the much larger and more aggressive red devil cichlid (Amphilophus labiatus), but they are two completely different species.
Key characteristics
- Appearance: This angelfish features a vibrant red or reddish-orange body. Some may also show subtle marbling or black markings that highlight their primary coloration.
- Size and lifespan: An adult can reach about 6 inches in height and length. With excellent water quality and care, a Red Devil angelfish can live for 10 years or more.
- Temperament: As cichlids, angelfish can be semi-aggressive, and the Red Devil is no exception. They can be territorial, especially when breeding, but are generally peaceful with appropriate tank mates and plenty of space.
- Coloration: To maintain their vibrant red coloring, a diet rich in carotenoids and the use of a darker substrate is recommended.
Aquarium care requirements
Tank setup
- Tank size: A 30-gallon tank is the minimum size for a single adult, but a 40-gallon or larger tank is recommended for a pair or small group.
- Tank height: Angelfish are tall fish and need a tall tank with ample vertical swimming room.
- Decor: Provide broad-leaved plants, driftwood, and rocks to create hiding spaces and areas for them to establish territories. Floating plants can help diffuse light and make the fish feel more secure.
- Substrate: A fine-to-medium-grade substrate is suitable, and a dark color can help enhance the fish's red pigmentation.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is best. Direct, harsh light can stress the fish.
Water parameters
- Temperature: Maintain a tropical temperature range of 75° to 82°F (24° to 28°C).
- pH: Keep the water slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.5 and 7.5.
- Water quality: Red Devil angelfish are sensitive to water quality. Perform regular partial water changes and maintain excellent filtration.
Diet and feeding
- Varied diet: They are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality flakes and pellets.
- Protein-rich foods: Supplement their diet with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to boost their coloration and overall health.
- Feeding schedule: Feed them small portions two to three times per day.
Tank mates
- Suitable companions: Choose similarly sized, peaceful fish that are not known for fin-nipping. Compatible tank mates include larger tetras (such as rummy nose and cardinal tetras), corydoras catfish, rainbowfish, and some peaceful gouramis.
- Incompatible companions: Avoid fin-nippers like some barb species, as well as very small fish or ornamental invertebrates like shrimp, which may be viewed as food.
