Seachem MetroPlex is an aquarium medication used to treat protozoan and anaerobic bacterial diseases in both freshwater and marine fish. Its active ingredient is metronidazole. The powder formula can be added to the aquarium water or mixed with food for internal parasite infections.

Benefits and indications
  • Effective against parasites: MetroPlex treats protozoan parasites such as Ichthyophthirius (freshwater Ich) and Cryptocaryon (saltwater Ich).
  • Combats bacterial infections: The medication also targets anaerobic bacterial diseases, which can cause symptoms like Hole-in-the-Head disease and Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE).
  • Two dosing methods: It can be dosed directly into the water for external infections or mixed with food for internal infections. Mixing it with food is particularly useful for treating fish in tanks that contain invertebrates, which can be sensitive to medications in the water.
  • Gentle on fish and bio-filter: MetroPlex is a gentle treatment with a low risk of overdose. It does not harm the beneficial bacteria in the biological filter, and it can be easily removed with activated carbon after treatment.

How to use
According to Seachem's website, there are two primary methods for using MetroPlex:
Dosing in water
  1. Remove all invertebrates from the tank, as they are sensitive to the medication.
  2. Turn off UV filters, ozone filters, and remove any chemical filtration media like carbon or Purigen.
  3. Add 1–2 measures (scoops) of MetroPlex per every 10 US gallons (40 liters) of water.
  4. Repeat this dosage every 48 hours for up to three weeks, or until the symptoms have disappeared.
Dosing in food
  1. Create a medicated food mix by combining the following:
    • 1 measure of Seachem MetroPlex
    • 1 measure of Seachem Focus (a binding agent that prevents the medication from dissolving into the water column)
    • 1 tablespoon of frozen or pellet food
    • A few drops of water (if using dry food)
  2. You can enhance the palatability of the mix with Seachem GarlicGuard or Entice.
  3. Feed this medicated food to your fish every day until the infection clears, for up to three weeks.

What to do after treatment
Once the treatment period is complete, you can remove the medication by using activated filter carbon, like Seachem's MatrixCarbon. MetroPlex does not leave a lingering residue in the tank's substrate or filter media.
