The Burmese archer fish (Toxotes blythii), also known as the clouded archerfish, is a unique and captivating freshwater fish native to the rivers and estuaries of Myanmar and Thailand. Unlike most other archerfish species, which often require brackish water, the Burmese archer fish thrives exclusively in freshwater environments.
Key Characteristics and Behavior
- Hunting Technique: This species is famous for its remarkable ability to hunt insects and other small prey above the water's surface. It uses a specialized mouth and tongue to form a tube, which it then uses to shoot powerful, accurate jets of water to knock prey into the water. This unique predatory behavior is a primary reason for its popularity in the aquarium trade.
- Appearance: It has a distinctive appearance with an elongated, laterally compressed body, large eyes positioned for binocular vision, and a flattened head. The body is typically silvery-white with striking black, cloud-shaped markings or spots along its sides.
- Size: In captivity, the Burmese archer fish typically grows to about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in length.
- Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit clear, shallow waters far from the coast, often near overhanging vegetation or root systems which provide ample hunting grounds

Aquarium Care Summary
- Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 55 to 75 gallons is recommended, with an emphasis on a wide surface area to allow for hunting and swimming. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent them from jumping out.
- Water Conditions: This fish prefers a temperature range of 77–82°F (25–28°C) and a pH of 6.5–8.0. As a true freshwater species, it does not require added salt, unlike its brackish relatives.
- Diet: They are carnivores and primarily insectivores. While they can be trained to eat high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, and mysis shrimp, live insects (like crickets or mealworms) are important for encouraging natural hunting behaviors.
- Social Behavior: They are active and intelligent social fish that do best in groups of three to six individuals; keeping them in pairs can lead to bullying. They are predatory and will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouths, so suitable tank mates include larger schooling fish or bottom-dwellers.
