Characteristics and Temperament
  • Coloration: They are most commonly a bright, fiery red, but can also be found in yellow, white, and purple variations. Their color intensifies with age and a proper diet.
  • Size: The King Kong variety is larger than standard blood parrots, generally reaching a maximum size of 8–10 inches, and sometimes more.
  • Personality: These cichlids are known to be active, intelligent, and can be quite interactive, often recognizing and engaging with their owners.
  • Temperament: They are generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with other similarly-sized, semi-aggressive fish. 

Care Requirements
  • Tank Size: Due to their size and waste production, a minimum of a 55-gallon tank is required for one fish, with at least 10 additional gallons for each extra fish.
  • Water Parameters: They are relatively hardy and tolerate a range of water conditions, but prefer a pH between 6.5–7.8 and a temperature range of 75–82°F (24–28°C). Stable water quality with strong filtration and regular water changes is crucial.
  • Diet: King Kong Parrots are omnivores. They should be fed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a soft substrate like sand as they enjoy digging. Offer plenty of hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and caves, while ensuring ample open swimming areas. Avoid sharp decorations that could injure them.
