"Albino Cuvier bichir" and related terms reveals that the species is a color variant of the Senegal bichir (Polypterus senegalus), not the Cuvier bichir. Despite the confusion in common names, the care requirements are the same as for the standard Senegal bichir.

Appearance
  • Coloration: Albino Senegal bichirs have a pale, translucent body that can appear creamy white, yellowish, or pinkish. This coloration contrasts with their red or pink eyes, a hallmark of albinism.
  • Size: This is one of the smaller bichir species, typically reaching about 12 to 14 inches in captivity.
  • Unique traits: Like all bichirs, they have an elongated, eel-like body covered in armored, rhomboid-shaped scales. A row of spiny dorsal finlets runs along their back. Their primitive, paired pectoral fins can be used to "walk" along the tank's bottom.

Care and tank setup
  • Tank size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a single albino Senegal bichir, with a larger tank being preferable.
  • Lid: A tight-fitting, heavy lid is essential, as bichirs are expert escape artists.
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C).
    • pH: 6.5–7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is ideal.
  • Substrate: Use a soft, sandy substrate. The bichir's foraging can cause it to accidentally ingest larger gravel, leading to impaction.
  • Decor: Provide plenty of hiding spots with driftwood, rocks, and live or artificial plants. Being a nocturnal species, they appreciate cover and dim lighting.

Diet and feeding
  • Carnivorous: Albino Senegal bichirs are opportunistic carnivores that will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth.
  • Feeding: They are primarily nocturnal, so feeding them at night or in low light is often most successful.
  • Foods: Offer a variety of meaty foods, including:
    • Live or frozen bloodworms
    • Earthworms
    • Mysis shrimp
    • Feeder fish (use caution, as they may carry parasites)
    • Meaty sinking pellets

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Albino Senegal bichirs are generally peaceful but will prey on any small fish or invertebrate they can swallow. They are known for becoming quite tame and interactive with their owners over time.
  • Tank mates:
    • Compatible: Good tank mates include similarly sized, robust, non-aggressive fish like larger gouramis, large tetras, and some cichlids (as long as they are not aggressive).
    • Incompatible: Avoid small fish, which will be eaten, and aggressive or territorial fish that could harass the bichir.

Breeding
Breeding Senegal bichirs in a home aquarium is challenging and rarely successful. Most specimens are captive-bred in commercial breeding facilities.
