Alternanthera reineckii, also known as Scarlet Temple or Ruby Red, is a popular freshwater aquatic plant prized for its intense pink, red, and purple foliage. Native to South America, this stem plant can add a vibrant splash of color to an aquascape

Care requirements
While some varieties are considered beginner-friendly, achieving the most vibrant coloration requires a "high-tech" setup with specific equipment.
  • Lighting: Requires medium to high-intensity lighting to develop and maintain its red coloration. A lack of sufficient light will cause the plant's leaves to turn a more subdued orange or green.
  • CO2: While it can survive without CO2 injection, supplementation at 20–30 ppm is highly recommended for robust growth and richer color.
  • Fertilization: Thrives with a nutrient-rich substrate and regular dosing of iron-rich liquid fertilizers. A deficiency in iron and potassium can cause pale or yellowing leaves and pinholes.
  • Substrate: A soil-based substrate is best to provide the nutrients this root-feeding plant needs.
  • Temperature: Prefers a temperature range of 72–82°F (22–28°C).
  • Water parameters: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0).
  • Pruning: Regular trimming promotes bushier growth. The cut tops can be replanted to propagate the plant.

Key considerations
  • "Melting": Like many aquatic plants, Alternanthera reineckii is often grown emersed (out of water) by nurseries. When first submerged in an aquarium, it can "melt" or lose its leaves while it adapts. This is normal and new growth will appear once the plant acclimates.
  • Algae: The slow to moderate growth rate of this plant, combined with high light, can make it susceptible to algae growth. Proper nutrient balancing is critical for success.
