Bloody Mary shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are a popular, selectively bred variety of freshwater dwarf shrimp known for their intense, deep red coloration. A defining characteristic that sets them apart from other red Neocaridina varieties is that their color comes from the red pigmentation in their body tissue, rather than their shell, giving them a rich, sometimes translucent, appearance
Appearance
- Coloration: Bloody Marys have a deep, uniform red color. Unlike Painted Fire Red shrimp, where the exoskeleton is red, the Bloody Mary's clear shell reveals the red body tissue underneath.
- Size: Like other dwarf shrimp, adults typically reach a maximum size of 1 to 1.5 inches. Females are usually larger and more intensely colored than males.
- Genetic lineage: Bloody Mary shrimp are a distinct genetic line, bred from chocolate-colored shrimp rather than the red cherry shrimp line. This differentiates them genetically from other red varieties.
Care and tank setup
As a type of Neocaridina, Bloody Mary shrimp are hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for beginners.
- Tank size: A 5- to 10-gallon tank is a good starting point for a colony.
-
Water parameters: They can tolerate a wide range of water parameters, but stable conditions are crucial for their health and breeding.
- Temperature: 68–78°F (20–25.5°C).
- pH: 6.5–8.0, with some keepers aiming for a narrower range like 7.0–7.5 for best results.
- Hardness: A general hardness (GH) of 6–12 is often recommended.
- Aquascaping: A planted tank with plenty of moss, driftwood, and leaf litter provides hiding places and encourages the growth of biofilm, a favorite food source. A dark substrate can help their red color stand out.
- Feeding: They are omnivores that will graze on algae and biofilm, but their diet should be supplemented with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.
- Tank mates: Bloody Mary shrimp are peaceful and should only be kept with small, non-aggressive fish or other invertebrates like snails. They will interbreed with other Neocaridina shrimp, which can result in offspring reverting to wild-type coloration.
Breeding
Bloody Mary shrimp are prolific breeders in a stable, well-maintained aquarium.
- Process: A mature female will carry eggs (a "saddle" on her back) that are moved to her swimmerets (rear legs) after mating. The eggs hatch after about 30 days into tiny, fully formed shrimplets that can immediately forage for themselves.
- Colony maintenance: Due to their specific lineage, Bloody Mary shrimp will generally breed true. However, to maintain the most intense and desirable coloration, some hobbyists selectively breed the best-colored individuals.
