The Dumbo Red Tail Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred, visually striking freshwater fish known for its oversized pectoral fins (resembling elephant ears, hence "Dumbo") and a vibrant red tail. They are peaceful, active, and social, making them a great choice for community aquariums and suitable for beginners.

Tank Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group, but a 20-gallon or larger tank is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate their potential breeding.
  • Decor: They thrive in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of live plants like Java Moss and Anubias, which offer hiding places and cover for potential fry. A dark substrate can help their colors pop.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter, is ideal. Strong currents can stress them or damage their large fins.
  • Lid: A secure lid is necessary, as guppies are known to jump.

Water Parameters
Dumbo Red Tail Guppies are hardy, but they prefer stable, clean water with specific parameters.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 6.8–8.0 (slightly alkaline is preferred)
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred

Diet and Feeding
They are omnivores and require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and coloration.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food designed for small tropical fish.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable Matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times per day, ensuring they consume it all within a few minutes to prevent overfeeding and water contamination.

Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, active, and social fish that should be kept in groups of at least six individuals. Keeping a ratio of 2–3 females for every male is recommended to prevent males from excessively harassing females.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other similarly sized, peaceful fish that won't nip at their fins, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Mollies and platies
    • Neon tetras
    • Harlequin rasboras
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 2 to 3 years, and sometimes longer with optimal conditions.
