The Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae) is a peaceful and tiny freshwater fish known for its striking ember-orange color. Hailing from the blackwater streams of Brazil, this nano fish is an excellent choice for planted community aquariums with other small, peaceful species

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group of six to ten fish, but 20 gallons or more is ideal for a larger school and better water stability.
  • Decor: A heavily planted tank with subdued lighting and a dark substrate will bring out their best colors. Add driftwood and leaf litter to create a natural, biotope-style environment.
  • Filtration: A gentle filter, such as a sponge filter, is recommended, as they do not thrive in strong currents.
  • Maintenance: Ember Tetras are sensitive to sudden changes in water quality. Ensure the tank is fully cycled, and perform regular partial water changes (e.g., 20–25% weekly) to keep conditions stable.

Water parameters
Ember Tetras prefer soft, slightly acidic water, similar to their native habitat.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 5.5–7.0
Hardness (GH) 2–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Diet and feeding
These omnivores have small mouths, so food should be appropriately sized.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich foods like frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, or baby brine shrimp.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Extremely peaceful and social. They should be kept in schools of at least six individuals to feel secure and reduce stress, though they tend to shoal loosely rather than school tightly.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly-sized fish, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Rasboras (Harlequin, Chili)
    • Smaller tetras
    • Dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma
    • Dwarf shrimp (they may eat the fry)
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 2 to 4 years.
