Fritz Zyme is a line of live nitrifying bacteria solutions that establish or fortify the biological filter in aquariums and ponds, thereby reducing toxic ammonia and nitrite levels. These products are essential for safely cycling a new tank or maintaining an established one after maintenance or when adding new livestock.
Key Products
Fritz Aquatics offers several FritzZyme products tailored for specific uses, with the main differentiation being between nitrifying bacteria (for the nitrogen cycle) and heterotrophic bacteria (for organic waste/sludge reduction).
Nitrifying Bacteria
These products contain live Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter species that are crucial for converting toxic ammonia into nitrite, and then into less harmful nitrate.
- FritzZyme 7 (Freshwater) & 9 (Saltwater): Standard formulas with a one-year shelf life that do not require refrigeration. They speed up the natural cycling process, which typically takes 7-14 days on average with these products.
- FritzZyme TurboStart 700 (Freshwater) & 900 (Saltwater): Highly concentrated versions of FritzZyme 7 and 9. They are designed to cycle an aquarium rapidly, often within 3-4 days, allowing for the safe, immediate addition of livestock. These require refrigeration and have a shorter, 4-6 month shelf life to ensure viability.
Organic Waste Reducers (Sludge Removers)
These contain powerful blends of naturally-occurring heterotrophic bacteria that digest organic sludge (fish waste, leftover food, etc.) to improve water clarity and reduce the need for frequent substrate cleaning.
- FritzZyme 360 (Freshwater) & 460 (Saltwater): Standard formulas for regular maintenance to break down sludge.
- FritzZyme Monster 360/460: Concentrated formulas designed for tanks with heavy bio-loads or "monster fish" like arowanas or Oscars.
Usage & Best Practices
- Dechlorinate Water: Always use a water conditioner, like Fritz Complete, to remove all chlorine and chloramines before adding any FritzZyme product, as these chemicals are lethal to the bacteria.
- Provide an Ammonia Source: The bacteria need an ammonia source (like fish food or a pure ammonia solution like Fritz Fishless Fuel) to survive and colonize the filter media.
- Monitor Water Parameters: Use test kits to regularly monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Optimal conditions for the bacteria are generally a pH of 7.3-8.0 and a temperature of 77-86°F (25-30°C).
- Discontinue UV/Protein Skimmers: Turn off UV sterilizers and protein skimmers for at least 5 days after application to allow the bacteria to establish in the system.
