The L-200 Green Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis) is a beautiful and highly sought-after suckermouth catfish native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela. It is prized for its vibrant green to yellow-green coloration and striking yellow spots.
There are two forms: the standard L-200, which has an olive-green body, and the "Hi-Fin" variant (often classified as Baryancistrus demantoides), which has a more brilliant yellow-green hue and taller dorsal fin. Both have similar care needs.
Tank and water requirements
- Tank size: A minimum of 50 gallons is recommended for a single L-200, as they can grow up to 6–7 inches and require ample territory.
- Filtration and flow: Robust filtration is crucial. These fish originate from fast-flowing, highly oxygenated rivers and thrive with strong water movement in the aquarium.
- Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel is ideal.
-
Water parameters:
- Temperature: Maintain a warm, stable temperature between 75 and 82°F (24–28°C).
- pH: A neutral to slightly acidic pH range of 6.0–7.5 is tolerated.
- Water quality: They are sensitive to poor water quality. Frequent, large water changes are essential to keep nitrates low.
- Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots using large pieces of driftwood, rocks, and caves. They are nocturnal and will spend most of the day hidden in a secluded area.
Diet and feeding
- Omnivorous diet: L-200s are omnivorous, but they prefer a diet rich in vegetable matter with some protein.
- Food types: A varied diet is essential. Offer a combination of high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and fresh blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. Supplement occasionally with protein-rich foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
- Feeding schedule: Feed once daily, preferably after the lights have been turned off.
Temperament and tank mates
- Territorial: L-200s are generally peaceful toward most fish but can be territorial with other bottom-dwellers, especially other plecos. Providing multiple hiding spots helps to reduce aggression.
-
Compatible companions: Choose peaceful fish that occupy the middle to top levels of the tank. Suitable companions include:
- Tetras
- Rainbowfish
- Larger gouramis
- Discus or angelfish
- Incompatible companions: Avoid keeping them with other very territorial bottom-dwellers or fish that will outcompete them for food during the night.
Breeding
- Cave spawners: L-200s are cave spawners, but breeding them in captivity is challenging and requires specific conditions, including excellent water quality and a suitable cave or breeding log
