The L-240 pleco, also known as the Galaxy or Vampire Pleco (Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias), is a medium-to-large carnivorous suckermouth catfish from South America. It is highly sought-after for its jet-black body covered in bright white spots, which is a consistent and stable pattern
Unlike many other plecos, it is not primarily an algae eater and requires a high-protein diet.
Tank and water requirements
- Tank size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a single adult to provide adequate space for swimming and territory. A larger tank is necessary for keeping multiples, as they can be territorial with their own kind.
- Filtration and flow: Robust filtration is essential for maintaining water quality and providing a well-oxygenated environment. Strong water flow is beneficial, as it mimics their natural fast-flowing river habitat.
- Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel is ideal.
-
Water parameters:
- Temperature: Maintain a warm, stable temperature between 75 and 82°F (24–28°C).
- pH: A neutral to slightly acidic pH range of 6.0–7.5 is tolerated.
- Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, rocks, and caves. The L-240 is nocturnal and will spend most of the day hidden.
Diet and feeding
- Carnivorous diet: As a carnivorous pleco, the L-240 requires a high-protein diet and is not a reliable algae eater.
- Food types: A varied diet is essential. Offer a combination of high-protein sinking pellets or wafers, and frozen foods like bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped mussel.
- Feeding schedule: Feed once daily, preferably after the lights have been turned off.
Temperament and tank mates
- Territorial: L-240s are generally peaceful toward most fish but can be territorial with other bottom-dwellers, especially other plecos.
-
Compatible companions: Choose peaceful fish that occupy the middle to top levels of the tank. Suitable companions include:
- Larger tetras
- Rainbowfish
- Larger gouramis
- Angelfish
- Incompatible companions: Avoid keeping them with other territorial bottom-dwellers, especially other plecos.
Breeding
- Cave spawners: L-240s are cave spawners, but breeding them in captivity is challenging and has rarely been accomplished
