Motoro Hybrid Stingrays are a captive-bred freshwater fish known for their striking patterns, which are often enhanced compared to wild Motoro rays (Potamotrygon motoro). They are a fascinating, though demanding, species that require significant space and pristine water conditions. Due to their large size and high waste output, they are only suitable for experienced aquarists.
Tank requirements
  • Tank size: For a single adult male, a minimum of a 220- to 300-gallon aquarium is required. Females can grow larger, requiring 300 to 400 gallons or more. For groups, a 500-gallon-plus system is necessary. The tank's footprint is more important than height; a surface area of at least 8x3 feet is ideal for adults.
  • Substrate: A very fine, soft sand substrate is crucial to prevent abrasions to the ray's delicate underside. Never use gravel or large pebbles, as they can cause injury and trap waste. A bare-bottom tank is also an option and can make cleaning easier.
  • Filtration: An oversized, powerful filtration system is essential to handle their heavy bioload and maintain the pristine water quality they require. A sump system is highly recommended.
  • Decor: The tank should provide ample open swimming space. Use minimal decor, consisting only of smooth driftwood or rounded, non-sharp stones.
  • Lighting: Subdued lighting is best, as they prefer lower light levels.
  • Lid: A tightly-fitting, weighted lid is mandatory. Stingrays are known to be able to climb and jump out of aquariums, especially during feeding.

Water parameters
Stingrays are extremely sensitive to water quality, especially to nitrogenous waste products.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 78–84°F (25–29°C)
pH 6.0–7.5
Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm (non-detectable)
Nitrate <20 ppm is preferred
  • Maintenance: Large, weekly water changes of 30–50% are essential due to their high waste output.

Diet and feeding
Motoro Hybrid Stingrays are carnivores and require a varied, meaty diet.
  • Primary foods: A combination of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, shrimp, earthworms, bloodworms, and frozen fish like silversides.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed 1–2 times daily. Young rays will require more frequent, smaller feedings. Promptly remove any uneaten food to prevent water contamination.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are generally peaceful but predatory. Keep them with other large, peaceful, mid-water fish that will not be eaten or harass the ray.
  • Tank Mates:
    • Good companions: Large, non-aggressive fish like Arowana, Datnoids, Peacock Bass, and larger Severums.
    • Avoid: Aggressive cichlids like Oscars, small fish that can be eaten, and anything that might compete for food. Avoid Loricariids (suckermouth catfish) which can injure them.
  • Defense: Handle with extreme caution. The venomous barb on their tail is used for defense and can inflict painful wounds. Seek medical help if you are stung.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 15–20 years
