he Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis) is a hardy and colorful freshwater labyrinth fish native to Southeast Asia. Despite their striking appearance, they are known for their semi-aggressive and territorial nature, similar to Betta fish. They are best suited for experienced aquarists who can manage their temperament and territoriality.
Tank and water requirements
- Tank size: A minimum of a 20-gallon tank is recommended for a single Paradise Fish, but a larger tank of 30 gallons or more is best, especially if housing multiple fish.
-
Water parameters:
- Temperature: While they can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, a stable range of 72–82°F (22–28°C) is ideal.
- pH: The ideal pH range is 6.5–7.5, though they can adapt to a wider range from 5.8 to 8.0.
- Water flow: They prefer slow-moving water, so use a filter with a gentle flow.
- Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots with driftwood, rocks, and dense live plants to create territories and break up lines of sight. Floating plants are also beneficial for diffusing light and anchoring bubble nests.
- Cover: Paradise fish are known to jump, so a secure lid is essential.
Diet and feeding
- Omnivorous diet: Paradise fish are not picky eaters but require a balanced diet of meaty and vegetable-based foods.
- Food types: A combination of high-quality flake or pellet food, frozen foods (like bloodworms and brine shrimp), and live foods (like daphnia and white worms) is recommended.
- Feeding schedule: Feed once or twice daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes.
Temperament and tank mates
- Aggressive and territorial: Male Paradise Fish are aggressive toward other males and can harass or kill smaller tank mates.
- Social groups: It's best to keep a single male per tank, or a group of one male with two or three females.
-
Compatible companions: Choose tank mates that are larger, more robust, and peaceful. Good options include:
- Larger tetras
- Peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish
- Some larger, non-aggressive cichlids
- Incompatible companions: Avoid housing them with slow-moving fish, fish with long flowing fins, or other gouramis and Betta fish, as they will likely be harassed.
Breeding
- Bubble nest breeder: Male Paradise Fish build a bubble nest at the water's surface, often incorporating plants.
- Courtship: The male courts a female, and after spawning, the male gathers the eggs and places them in the nest.
- Aggression: The male will fiercely defend the nest. The female should be removed after spawning to prevent her from being attacked.
- Hatching: The eggs will hatch in about 2 to 4 days, and the fry will become free-swimming within a week. The male should be removed once the fry are free-swimming, as he may eat them
