Parkinson's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia parkinsoni) are an active, peaceful, and beautiful species known for their distinct yellow or orange and black highlights on their fins. They are a great community fish, but require ample swimming space and pristine water conditions to thrive and display their best colors.

Tank Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of a 55-gallon long aquarium is highly recommended for a small group (6-8 individuals), as they are active swimmers and need plenty of horizontal space.
  • Decor: They do best in a planted tank with dense vegetation along the back and sides to provide cover, and large open areas in the middle for swimming. Darker substrates and backgrounds can help their colors pop. Driftwood and rocks can also be used to create hiding spots.
  • Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential to provide high water quality and moderate to high water flow, mimicking their natural stream and river habitats. Good surface agitation is necessary for oxygenation.
  • Maintenance: They are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes, so the aquarium must be fully cycled and mature before adding fish. Regular weekly water changes of 25-30% are crucial to maintain low nitrate levels. A tight-fitting lid is needed as they are known to jump.

Water Parameters
Stable, clean water is vital for Parkinson's Rainbowfish. They are adaptable but prefer harder, more alkaline water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–78°F (22–26°C), though some sources suggest up to 82°F (28°C)
pH 7.0–8.0 (neutral to slightly alkaline)
Hardness (GH/KH) Moderate to Hard (10-20 dGH)

Diet and Feeding
They are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet to ensure optimal health and color development.
  • Staple: High-quality flake, granule, or small pellet foods designed for omnivores.
  • Supplement: Offer a variety of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mysis shrimp.
  • Vegetable Matter: They enjoy browsing on algae and spirulina-based foods, and appreciate blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful community fish that thrive in groups. Keeping a group of at least six (ideally with more females than males) encourages natural schooling behavior and vibrant male color displays.
  • Tank Mates: Excellent companions include other peaceful species like other rainbowfish, large tetras, rasboras, danios, peaceful barbs, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid very large, aggressive fish or known fin-nippers, which can stress the rainbowfish or damage their long fins.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5 to 8 years or more.
