The Rainbow Cichlid (Herotilapia multispinosa), also known as the T-Bar Cichlid, is a relatively small and peaceful Central American cichlid. It is known for its ability to change color dramatically based on its mood or when spawning, displaying shades of yellow, red, gold, and brown.

Tank and water requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of a 40-gallon tank is recommended for a pair or small group.
  • Substrate: A sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal, as they naturally inhabit muddy waters and areas with detritus.
  • Filtration: A reliable filter to maintain clean water is important, as with any cichlid.
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: Maintain a temperature between 76 and 85°F (24–29°C), with a "sweet spot" around 80°F.
    • pH: They prefer a pH range of 7.0–8.0 and can tolerate harder water.
    • Water quality: They are sensitive to nitrates, so regular water changes are key.
  • Decorations: Provide plenty of cover and hiding places with driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants.

Diet and feeding
  • Omnivorous diet: In the wild, their diet consists largely of algae, detritus, and small invertebrates.
  • Food types: A varied diet is recommended.
    • Staple: High-quality pellets or flakes with a vegetable or spirulina base.
    • Supplements: Include frozen or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and tubifex worms.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed once or twice daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Temperament and tank mates
  • Generally peaceful: The Rainbow Cichlid is a calm and mild-mannered cichlid, especially compared to other Central American species.
  • Territorial during spawning: While generally peaceful, they can become territorial and more aggressive when breeding.
  • Tank mates: Choose similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Suitable companions include:
    • Other peaceful cichlids (e.g., Acaraas, angelfish).
    • Medium-sized tetras, barbs, and catfish.
  • Group keeping: They can be kept in pairs or groups, and the presence of other fish may help diffuse aggression.

Breeding
  • Substrate spawners: Rainbow Cichlids are pair-bonded substrate spawners. A pair will select a flat surface, such as a rock or slate, to lay their eggs.
  • Parental care: Both the male and female will protect the eggs and fry, with the female fanning the eggs and the male defending the outer territory.
  • Ease of breeding: Breeding them in a home aquarium is relatively easy and rewarding
