Red tiger shrimp are a vibrant variety of freshwater dwarf shrimp, valued for their striking red stripes over a translucent or milky body. They belong to the genus Caridina, which generally requires more specific water parameters than the hardier Neocaridina shrimp, making them an excellent choice for intermediate-to-advanced shrimp keepers.

Varieties
Different types of red tiger shrimp exist, primarily bred from Caridina mariae and other Caridina species for enhanced coloration and patterns.
  • Caridina mariae
'Red Tiger': This variety has a semi-transparent body with deep red stripes. They are relatively hardy for a Caridina species and are a good entry point for keepers new to this genus.
  • Red Fancy Tiger
: A hybrid of tiger shrimp and crystal red shrimp (Caridina cantonensis), this variety displays more intricate red-and-white stripes and patterns.
  • Orange Eye Red Tiger
: A sought-after variant known for its bright orange eyes, which stand out against its striped body.

Care and tank setup
Maintaining red tiger shrimp requires soft, slightly acidic, and stable water conditions. They are sensitive to sudden changes in parameters.
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 68–76°F (20–24°C).
    • pH: 6.0–7.5, but many variants prefer a narrower range of 6.0–6.8.
    • Hardness: GH 4–10 and KH 1–4.
    • Substrate: An active soil substrate, such as ADA Amazonia or Fluval Stratum, is highly recommended to help maintain the correct water chemistry.
  • Tank size: A 10-gallon aquarium is a good minimum size to help maintain stable water parameters.
  • Filtration: A sponge filter is ideal, as it provides gentle water movement, excellent biological filtration, and is safe for baby shrimp (shrimplets).
  • Aquascaping: Provide plenty of cover and foraging surfaces by adding live plants (like moss), driftwood, and leaf litter. This also encourages the growth of biofilm, a key part of their diet.
  • Tank mates: A species-only tank is the safest option. If kept with other creatures, only consider peaceful, non-predatory tank mates like snails or small, gentle nano fish. Do not keep them with Neocaridina shrimp, as they prefer different water parameters.
  • Feeding: Red tiger shrimp are scavengers. They graze on algae and biofilm, which should be supplemented with high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.

Breeding
Breeding red tiger shrimp is achievable in a tank with stable, ideal conditions.
  • Process: Females carry a clutch of eggs under their tail for about 30 days. The eggs hatch into miniature versions of the adults, which can immediately forage for food.
  • Genetic stability: Unlike hybrids, the base red tiger shrimp (Caridina mariae 'Red Tiger') typically breeds true to its color. For hybrid types like the Red Fancy Tiger, selective breeding is required to maintain the most desirable patterns
