The aquatic plant sold as Rotala indica is frequently a misidentified variant of Rotala rotundifolia. This is a common confusion in the aquarium hobby. The true Rotala indica is less common, but the two can be distinguished by their growth habits.
Care for Rotala species
Both plants are hardy, but proper conditions are essential for achieving their best color and shape.
- Lighting: Moderate to high-intensity lighting is necessary to bring out the red or pink color in both species.
- CO2 Injection: While not strictly required, adding CO2 significantly boosts growth and color intensity.
- Fertilization: A regular supply of nutrients, particularly iron, is important. A rich substrate will also help, especially for the true Rotala indica.
- Propagation: Both are easy to propagate by replanting trimmed stems.
- Maintenance: Regular trimming is necessary to maintain a dense, bushy appearance. Untrimmed stems will reach for the surface, causing lower leaves to be shaded and fall off.
Common varieties
In the hobby, you may see different color variants of Rotala rotundifolia sold under different names:
- Rotala rotundifolia 'Green': A green variant that is easy to grow.
- Rotala rotundifolia 'H'ra': A type known for its intense orange and red color.
- Rotala rotundifolia 'Orange Juice': A new cultivar that shows orange-pink coloration.
