The common name "Saffron" can refer to a plant used to make the spice or, in the aquarium hobby, a type of African cichlid. The correct care depends on which one you have.
Saffron Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp.)
The Saffron Peacock Cichlid is a vibrant, African cichlid from Lake Malawi. This man-made hybrid is prized for its yellow-orange coloration, often with blue highlights.
Tank and water requirements
- Tank size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a group, but a 75-gallon or larger is ideal for accommodating multiple territorial males.
- Substrate: A fine sand substrate is best, as these cichlids are bottom-sifters.
- Filtration: Robust filtration is essential for maintaining clean, alkaline water conditions.
-
Water parameters:
- Temperature: Maintain a stable temperature between 74–82°F.
- pH: A high pH of 7.5–8.5 is necessary to replicate their native Lake Malawi habitat.
- Water changes: Regular partial water changes (around 25–30% weekly) are essential.
- Decorations: Aquascape with plenty of stacked rocks, caves, and crevices to create territories and hiding places. Leave plenty of open swimming space in the center.
Diet and feeding
- Omnivorous diet: A varied diet is recommended.
- Food types: A combination of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes is the staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms to enhance coloration.
- Feeding schedule: Feed small portions once or twice daily.
Temperament and tank mates
- Semi-aggressive: Males can be territorial, especially toward other males and during breeding.
- Tank mates: Best kept with other similarly sized and tempered Peacock cichlids and Haps. To minimize aggression, maintain a male-to-female ratio of at least 1:3.
Saffron Crocus (Crocus sativus)
The saffron crocus is a plant that produces the expensive saffron spice. It is grown from bulbs called corms.
Planting and site requirements
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Soil: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Sandy loam is an ideal substrate.
- Timing: Plant the corms in late summer or early fall.
- Depth and spacing: Dig holes 3 inches deep and space the corms 3 to 4 inches apart.
Care and maintenance
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. After that, they are drought-tolerant and only need to be watered during prolonged dry periods. Overwatering can cause the corms to rot.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize after flowering each year.
- Rodent protection: Rodents like to eat the corms, so using hardware cloth is recommended.
Harvesting and propagation
- Harvest: The lavender flowers bloom in the fall. Use tweezers to pluck the delicate, red stigmas from the center of the flowers in the morning.
- Drying: Dry the stigmas in a warm place or dehydrator until they become brittle.
- Propagation: The corms multiply over time and should be divided every 3 to 5 years
