The Silver Shortbody Lyretail Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a peaceful, selectively bred variation of the standard molly fish. It is distinguished by its short, rounded "balloon" body and a flowing, lyre-shaped tail fin. These hardy and active livebearers are an elegant addition to community aquariums, suitable for beginners.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group, but a 30-gallon or larger tank is ideal for maintaining stable water conditions and providing ample swimming space.
  • Decor: A planted tank with plenty of vegetation, driftwood, and rocks provides security and hiding spots. Use smooth décor to prevent injury to their delicate fins.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system that provides moderate water movement is best, as strong currents can stress them or damage their fins.
  • Lid: A secure lid is necessary, as mollies are known jumpers.

Water parameters
Silver Shortbody Lyretail Mollies are hardy but thrive in stable, hard, and slightly alkaline water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 7.0–8.5
Hardness (GH/KH) 10–25 dGH (moderately hard to hard)
  • Maintenance: Regular partial water changes (e.g., 25% weekly) are essential for pristine water quality.

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, they need a varied diet that includes both meaty and plant-based foods.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Small, protein-rich foods like live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or blanched vegetables like spinach.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Silver Shortbody Lyretail Mollies are peaceful, active, and social fish. They do best in groups of at least four to six individuals. Keep a ratio of two to three females for every male to prevent male harassment.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly sized fish that tolerate similar water conditions, such as platies, guppies, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers and will breed readily. Providing dense plants offers cover for new fry from adult fish.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live for 3 to 5 years
