-
Preparing Malaysian driftwood for an aquariumProper preparation is key to ensuring the driftwood is safe for your aquatic pets.
- Clean thoroughly: Scrub the wood with a stiff brush under running water to remove any loose dirt, debris, or insects. Avoid using any soaps or chemicals.
- Boil or soak: You can boil the driftwood for 1–2 hours to sterilize it and help leach out some of the tannins. Alternatively, you can soak it in a bucket of water for 1–2 weeks, changing the water daily until the water is clearer.
- Ensure it sinks: If the wood still floats after soaking, you can weigh it down with a rock or other aquarium-safe item until it becomes waterlogged and sinks on its own.
- Know about tannins: Malaysian driftwood naturally releases tannins, which can tint the water a yellow or brown color. This is harmless to your fish and can even benefit species that prefer blackwater environments. Regular water changes will reduce the tint over time.
