The NTT Datnoid, or Northern Thailand Tiger Fish (Datnioides undecimradiatus), is a prized, large, predatory freshwater fish known for its striking vertical black stripes on a lighter body. It is a popular, though challenging, species in the aquarium hobby due to its specific care requirements and territorial nature.
Key Characteristics & Habitat
- Scientific Name: Datnioides undecimradiatus
- Origin: Native to freshwater rivers in Southeast Asia, specifically the Mekong basin in Northeastern Thailand, Laos, and parts of Cambodia.
- Appearance: Distinguished by its widely spaced, thin vertical bars. The base tone is generally not as gold as other datnoid species, and its color is known to be more stable, less prone to fading to black due to stress.
- Size: Can reach up to 16-18 inches (40-45 cm) in captivity, and potentially larger in the wild.
- Temperament: A predatory fish that is generally peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates but will eat any fish that fits in its large mouth. They can be shy initially, requiring plenty of hiding spot.
- Aquarium Care Summary
- Tank Size: Requires a large aquarium; a minimum of 125-150 gallons is recommended for an adult specimen.
-
Water Parameters: Prefers clean, well-oxygenated water. They are sensitive to water quality changes, so regular water changes are essential.
- Temperature: 74-82°F (23-28°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- Diet: Carnivores that primarily eat smaller fish and invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they can be weaned onto a varied diet of high-quality pellets, frozen foods like krill and shrimp, and occasional live foods.
- Tankmates: Best kept with other large, non-aggressive fish such as Silver Arowanas, large catfish, or larger cichlids.
- Difficulty Level: Intermediate to advanced aquarists, due to their size, diet, and water quality needs.
