The Black Koi Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred, livebearing freshwater fish prized for its koi-like pattern of vibrant orange and red splashes on a dark, often black or deep blue body. These energetic and peaceful fish are a great addition to community aquariums and are generally easy to care for, making them suitable for beginners.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A 10-gallon tank is the minimum size for a small group of guppies (three to five fish), but a 20-gallon or larger tank is recommended to provide more swimming space and maintain water quality.
  • Decor: A well-planted tank with a mix of open swimming areas and plenty of live plants (such as Java Moss or Anubias) is ideal. Plants provide hiding spots, which can help reduce stress and offer shelter for fry.
  • Filtration: A gentle filter, such as a sponge filter, is best, as guppies prefer moderate to slow water flow. A filter intake guard is essential to protect fry from being sucked up.
  • Lid: Guppies are known jumpers, so a secure lid is a must.

Water parameters
Black Koi Guppies thrive in stable, hard, and slightly alkaline water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C), with a lifespan-optimizing range of 76–78°F.
pH 7.0–8.0 is best for their health and color.
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred.

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, Black Koi Guppies need a varied diet for vibrant coloration and optimal health.
  • Staple: A high-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Small, protein-rich live or frozen foods, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable matter: Spirulina-based flakes or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times daily, only as much as they can eat in a couple of minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, active, and social fish. To reduce stress on females, keep a ratio of two to three females for every male.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include similarly sized, peaceful species that won't nip at their fins, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Mollies and Platies
    • Neon Tetras and Harlequin Rasboras
    • Bristlenose Plecos
  • Shrimp and Snails: They can coexist with larger invertebrates like Nerite snails and Amano shrimp. However, they may eat smaller shrimp fry.
  • Lifespan: With proper care and optimal conditions, they typically live for 2 to 3 years
