Black rili shrimp, also known as carbon rili, are a type of freshwater dwarf shrimp prized by aquarists for their distinctive coloration. They belong to the species Neocaridina davidi, making them a relatively hardy and easy-to-care-for invertebrate
Appearance
- Coloration: They feature a deep, solid black or brownish-black coloration on their head and tail. In contrast, the midsection of their body is typically clear or bluish, creating a striking "rili" pattern.
- Size: A fully grown black rili shrimp will reach a size of about 1.6 inches (4 cm).
Care and tank setup
- Hardiness: As members of the Neocaridina genus, they are quite hardy and can tolerate a wider range of water parameters than other ornamental shrimp.
- Water parameters: They thrive in a tank with stable water parameters. Avoid dramatic changes in temperature, pH, or general hardness, as shrimp are sensitive to fluctuations.
- Aquarium size: While they can be kept in smaller tanks, a 10-gallon aquarium is a good starting point for a colony, as it offers more stability.
- Tank mates: Black rili shrimp are peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive, small fish and invertebrates. They are a good choice for planted aquariums.
- Feeding: They are omnivores and will graze on algae and biofilm in the tank. You can supplement their diet with specialized shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and other fish food.
Breeding
- Reproduction: Like other Neocaridina shrimp, black rili shrimp are prolific breeders in the right conditition
