black tiger shrimp (Caridina mariae or its various hybrid forms) within the genus Caridina. Unlike the hardier Neocaridina varieties like black rili, these shrimp require more specific water parameters and are often considered better suited for advanced shrimp keepers.

Popular types of black tiger shrimp
Several distinct varieties of black tiger shrimp are available to hobbyists, all belonging to the Caridina genus:
  • Caridina mariae "Black Tiger": A selectively bred variety known for its dark, sometimes solid black, coloration and orange eyes. Some varieties are called Orange Eye Blue Tigers that have been bred to be even darker over time.
  • Black Fancy Tiger Shrimp: A hybrid of the classic tiger shrimp (Caridina mariae) and crystal shrimp (Caridina cantonensis). These shrimp are prized for their unique, variable patterns of bold black-and-white striping and patches.
  • Black TiBee Shrimp
: A hybrid created by crossing a tiger shrimp with a Taiwan Bee shrimp. They have a striking black coloration with unique striping and are known for being a bit more delicate than other varieties.

Care and tank setup
Caridina shrimp are more sensitive to water fluctuations than Neocaridina shrimp and require a more controlled environment.
  • Water parameters: They prefer soft, acidic water.
    • pH: 5.8–6.8
    • Temperature: 68–77°F (20–25°C), with some requiring cooler ranges (60–72°F).
    • Hardness: Use a buffering substrate to help maintain the correct pH, as they need low carbonate hardness (KH).
  • Substrate: An active soil substrate is highly recommended to help regulate the water's pH and hardness.
  • Diet: A varied diet is recommended, including high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, biofilm, and blanched vegetables.
  • Tank mates: It is best to keep Caridina species in a species-only tank, or with other peaceful Caridina species, to prevent interbreeding and to avoid predation. Avoid keeping them with Neocaridina species.
  • Breeding: Black tiger shrimp will breed in freshwater, but maintaining the ideal water parameters is critical for the health of both the eggs and the baby shrimp. To maintain high-quality coloration and patterning, selective breeding is necessary.
