The Blue Emperor Tetra (Inpaichthys kerri) is a popular and peaceful freshwater fish known for its shimmering blue and purple hues. This social schooling fish adds a vibrant splash of color to community tanks and is a good choice for beginners due to its manageable care requirements.

Tank requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of 20 gallons is ideal for a group of six or more Blue Emperor Tetras. They are active swimmers and prefer horizontal space to school and explore.
  • Decor: A well-planted tank with subdued lighting and a dark substrate best mimics their natural habitat and helps their colors stand out. Include live plants like Java Fern, driftwood, and rocks to provide cover.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system that doesn't create a strong current is ideal, as they prefer calmer water.
  • Maintenance: Ensure the tank is fully cycled before introducing the fish, as they are sensitive to fluctuating water conditions. Regular partial water changes are essential to maintain high water quality.

Water parameters
Blue Emperor Tetras thrive in stable, soft, and slightly acidic water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 5.5–7.5
Hardness (GH) Soft to moderately hard (2–15 dGH)

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, Blue Emperor Tetras will accept a variety of foods.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Small, protein-rich foods like frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, or baby brine shrimp.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Blue Emperor Tetras are peaceful and social fish. They should be kept in schools of at least six individuals to feel secure and reduce stress.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly-sized fish, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Rasboras (Harlequin, Chili)
    • Pencilfish
    • Dwarf cichlids
  • Compatibility: While generally peaceful, they can eat smaller dwarf shrimp fry, though adults are usually safe. Avoid keeping them with much larger or more aggressive fish.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 3 to 6 years.
