The clown angelfish is a freshwater color variant of the common angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), selectively bred for a distinctive patchy, marbled, and high-contrast pattern. It is known for its striking, cloud-like black patches over a pale body, and some variants develop a blue sheen with age.

Appearance
  • Coloration: The pattern of black, cloudy patches against a white or silvery body is unique to each individual. The contrast is what gives them their clown-like name.
  • Size: The clown angelfish is a standard-sized angelfish, reaching about 6 inches (15 cm) in length and often taller in height.
  • Variants: The "Pinoy Clown" is a specific cross that develops a blue sheen as it matures, while the "Smokey Marble Clown" has a more muted, marbled pattern.

Care and tank setup
The clown angelfish is a hardy and adaptable fish, but like other angelfish, it requires proper care and a suitable environment.
  • Tank size: A minimum of a 30-gallon tank is recommended for a single fish or a pair, but a larger 55-gallon tank or more is ideal for a community setup. Because of their tall body shape, a tall tank is always preferable.
  • Water parameters: They thrive in stable, well-maintained water conditions.
    • Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C).
    • pH: 6.5–7.5.
  • Aquascaping: A planted tank with plenty of cover from driftwood and tall plants like Amazon Swords is ideal. This provides hiding places and reduces stress.
  • Water flow: A gentle water current is best, as strong flow can stress them.

Diet and feeding
  • Omnivorous: Clown angelfish readily accept a variety of high-quality foods.
  • Recommended foods:
    • High-quality flake or pellet food.
    • Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
    • Some vegetable matter, such as blanched zucchini or spirulina flakes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding. Keeping them in a group of 5–6 juveniles is often recommended to allow for natural pairing and disperse aggression.
  • Compatible tank mates: Choose peaceful, similarly sized fish that are not known fin-nippers. Good companions include corydoras catfish, larger tetras, and other angelfish varieties.
  • Incompatible tank mates: Avoid aggressive or fast-moving fish, as well as notorious fin-nippers like tiger barbs. Do not keep them with very small fish or shrimp, as angelfish will often prey on them as they mature.

Breeding
Clown angelfish are monogamous and will pair up within a group. They are egg-layers and will spawn on a flat surface in the tank. The parents will guard the eggs and fry, and it is often best to move the pair to a separate breeding tank during this period.
