The Diamond Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), also known as the Diamond Head Neon Tetra, is a peaceful and vibrant schooling fish. This tank-bred variant of the standard Neon Tetra features a brilliant metallic blue body and a shimmering, diamond-shaped patch on its forehead

Tank requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small school, but 20 gallons or more is ideal, as they are active and need horizontal space to school and swim.
  • Decor: A well-planted tank with driftwood, rocks, and areas of shade is best to replicate their natural Amazonian habitat. Dark substrate, such as black sand, will help their iridescent colors pop.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system, like a sponge filter, is recommended, as they do not thrive in strong currents.
  • Maintenance: They are sensitive to fluctuating water conditions, so the tank should be fully cycled and mature before adding them.

Water parameters
Diamond Neon Tetras prefer soft, slightly acidic water. Stability is crucial for their health.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 5.5–7.0
Hardness (GH) 2–10 dGH

Diet and feeding
As omnivores,
Diamond Neon Tetras
will accept a variety of foods.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich foods like frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, or brine shrimp.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Extremely peaceful and social, they must be kept in schools of at least six individuals to feel secure and reduce stress.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly-sized fish that won't outcompete them for food, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Rasboras (Harlequin, Chili)
    • Smaller tetras (Rummy-nose, Cardinal)
    • Guppies
  • Compatibility: While generally peaceful, they can nip at the long fins of fish like Bettas if not kept in a large enough school. They may also prey on dwarf shrimp fry.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5–8 years
