The Full Gold Ribbon Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a visually stunning and peaceful freshwater fish known for its solid, vibrant golden coloration and long, flowing fins. These fancy guppies are an active, social species that are a popular choice for community aquariums and a great project for intermediate aquarists.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group, but a 20-gallon or larger tank is recommended for these active swimmers.
  • Decor: A planted tank is ideal, providing cover and security. Use smooth hardscape and live plants like Java Moss or Anubias to prevent injury to their delicate fins.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter, is best. Strong currents can damage their flowing ribbon fins.
  • Lid: A secure lid is necessary, as guppies are known jumpers.

Water parameters
Full Gold Ribbon Guppies thrive in stable, clean, and slightly harder, alkaline water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C), with 76–78°F (24–25°C) being optimal.
pH 6.8–8.0, with a target of 7.0–7.5 being preferred.
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred to support health and coloration.

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, they require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and vibrant color.
  • Staple: A high-quality flake or micro-pellet food is recommended.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich foods like live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms several times per week.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times per day, giving them only what they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful and social fish that should be kept in groups. A ratio of 2–3 females per male is recommended to prevent males from excessively harassing females.
  • Breeding: Ribbon-finned males typically cannot breed due to their elongated gonopodium. To breed them, a non-ribbon-finned male must be paired with a ribbon-finned female.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include peaceful, similarly sized fish that will not nip their fins, such as:
    • Corydoras Catfish
    • Mollies and Platies
    • Neon Tetras
  • Invertebrates: Larger invertebrates like Nerite snails and Amano shrimp are generally safe. Guppies may eat smaller shrimp fry, so provide dense plants for cover if you want to breed shrimp.

Lifespan
With proper care, a Full Gold Ribbon Guppy can typically live for 2 to 3 years, and sometimes longer
