he Half Black Red Tail Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) male is a striking, selectively bred fish known for its contrasting black rear body and a vibrant, flowing red tail. Males are more brightly colored and have larger fins than females. These guppies are peaceful, active, and social, making them a popular and excellent choice for community aquariums and beginners alike.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of a 10-gallon aquarium is suitable for a small group of six guppies, but 20 gallons or larger is recommended to provide ample swimming space for these active fish.
  • Decor: A planted tank is ideal, as it offers a mix of open swimming areas and hiding places. Live plants like Java Moss and Anubias provide cover, which can reduce stress and protect potential fry.
  • Filtration: A gentle filter, such as a sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with a baffle, is recommended. Strong currents can stress the fish or damage their flowing fins.
  • Lid: Guppies are known jumpers, so a secure lid is a must.

Water parameters
Fancy guppies are less resilient than their wild counterparts and thrive in stable, clean, and slightly hard, alkaline water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C), with 76–78°F (24–25°C) being optimal.
pH 6.8–8.0, with a slightly alkaline target of 7.0–7.5.
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred to support health and coloration.

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, Half Black Red Tail Guppies require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and vibrant color. Their mouths are small, so food should be appropriately sized.
  • Staple: A high-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times per day, ensuring they consume it all within a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Half Black Red Tail Guppies are peaceful, active, and social fish. Males are known to display to one another and females.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly sized fish, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Mollies and platies
    • Neon tetras and harlequin rasboras
  • Female interaction: While males can be housed alone, they are more content and less stressed with females present. If you do keep males and females together, maintain a ratio of 2–3 females for every male to prevent females from being over-harassed.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live for 2 to 3 years.
