The Koi Red Ear Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred variety of guppy known for its koi-like red and white coloration. They are peaceful, active, and social, making them a popular choice for beginner aquarists.

Tank Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group, but a 20-gallon or larger tank is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate their prolific breeding.
  • Decor: A planted tank with plenty of live plants like Java Moss and Anubias provides hiding places, which can be especially helpful for fry survival. Dark substrate can also help their colors stand out.
  • Filtration: A good filtration system with a gentle flow, such as a sponge filter, is ideal. Guppies prefer slower water movement and are sensitive to strong currents.
  • Lid: A secure lid is recommended, as guppies are known to be jumpers.

Water Parameters
Maintaining stable, high-quality water is essential for the health and vibrant color of fancy guppies.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C). A temperature of 76–78°F (24–25°C) is often considered ideal.
pH 6.8–7.8, with slightly alkaline water (7.0–8.0) being optimal.
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred. Minerals like calcium and magnesium help them thrive.

Diet and Feeding
As omnivores,
Koi Red Ear Guppies
require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and coloration.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food that includes both meaty and plant-based ingredients.
  • Supplement: Live or frozen foods, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, should be offered regularly as a treat.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas can be beneficial for digestion.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times per day, giving them only as much as they can consume in two to three minutes.

Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Temperament: Koi Red Ear Guppies are peaceful and active. They are a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6. To prevent males from constantly harassing females, it is best to keep them in a ratio of 2–3 females for every male.
  • Tank Mates: Choose similarly sized, peaceful fish that thrive in the same water conditions. Good companions include:
    • Corydoras Catfish
    • Mollies and Platies
    • Neon Tetras
    • Harlequin Rasboras
    • Swordtails
  • Invertebrates: Larger invertebrates like Nerite snails or Amano shrimp are generally safe. While guppies typically won't harm adult dwarf shrimp, they may eat the shrimp fry, especially if there isn't enough dense vegetation to provide cover.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 2 to 3 years.
