The L-471 Big Gold Point is a specific type of dwarf snowball pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L471), a small suckermouth catfish from the Rio Ventuari in Venezuela. It is known for its black body with relatively large, yellowish-white spots. This species is also referred to as the White Spotted Dwarf Hypancistrus.

Tank and water requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of a 15- to 20-gallon tank is recommended for a single L-471. Because they are a small species, rarely exceeding 3.5–4 inches, they are well-suited for smaller aquariums.
  • Substrate: Fine sand is the ideal substrate. This species enjoys sifting through the substrate, and coarse gravel can cause injury.
  • Filtration: Good filtration is necessary to maintain clean water, as this species prefers moderate to high water flow and is sensitive to poor water quality.
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: Maintain a warm, stable temperature between 75 and 84°F (24–29°C).
    • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 5.5–7.5 is tolerated.
  • Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers using rocks, caves, and driftwood. The L-471 is a reclusive, nocturnal species that will appreciate the shade.

Diet and feeding
  • Carnivorous diet: Unlike many plecos, the   is not a dedicated algae eater. It is omnivorous but has a strong preference for protein-rich, carnivorous foods.
  • Food types: A varied diet is recommended.
    • Staple: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for carnivores.
    • Supplements: Include meaty foods like frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mussels.
    • Vegetables: While they may nibble on blanched vegetables like zucchini or peas, do so sparingly to avoid polluting the tank.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed once daily, preferably after the lights have been turned off.

Temperament and tank mates
  • Peaceful: The L-471 is generally peaceful and hardy.
  • Territorial: Males can become territorial with other bottom-dwellers, especially during breeding.
  • Tank mates: Choose peaceful, similarly sized fish. Suitable companions include:
    • Small tetras
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Apistogramma dwarf cichlids
  • Incompatible companions: Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive, or territorial bottom-dwellers.

Breeding
  • Cave spawners: The L-471 is a cave spawner, with the male trapping a female inside a cave to lay eggs.
  • Parental care: The male guards and fans the eggs until they hatch.
  • Requirements: To encourage breeding, provide plenty of caves and a protein-rich diet.
