The Panda Corydoras (Corydoras panda) is a popular, small, peaceful, and active bottom-dwelling catfish known for its distinct black patches over its eyes, dorsal fin, and the base of its tail, resembling a panda bear. They are a great choice for a community aquarium and are well-suited for beginners.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of a 15 to 20-gallon aquarium is recommended for a school of six or more fish. They are social and active bottom dwellers, needing enough horizontal space to forage and school.
  • Decor: The tank should have plenty of live plants and hiding places using driftwood or rocks. They prefer subdued lighting, which can be achieved with floating plants.
  • Substrate: Use a fine, soft sand substrate to protect their delicate, sensory barbels. Rough or sharp-edged gravel can damage these whiskers, leading to infection.
  • Filtration: A good filter with a gentle flow is best, as they prefer calm waters. A filter intake guard may be needed to protect smaller fish.
  • Lid: A lid is recommended as they may occasionally dart to the surface to gulp air.

Water parameters
Panda Corydoras are adaptable but require stable, clean water with slightly cooler temperatures than most tropical fish.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 68–77°F (20–25°C)
pH 6.0–7.5
Hardness (GH) 2–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)
  • Maintenance: Regular partial water changes (e.g., 25% weekly) are essential for maintaining water quality and preventing the buildup of nitrates, which can be harmful to their barbels.

Diet and feeding
As omnivores and bottom feeders, they need a dedicated, varied diet to ensure they get enough nutrition. They should not be expected to survive only on leftovers.
  • Staple: High-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and flake food that reaches the bottom of the tank.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed once or twice daily. Feeding some food after the lights are off can help ensure the corys get their share without competition from faster-swimming fish.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Extremely peaceful and highly social. They must be kept in a school of at least six of their own kind to feel secure and exhibit natural schooling behaviors.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other non-aggressive, similarly sized community fish that occupy the mid to upper water column, such as tetras, rasboras, and livebearers. Avoid aggressive bottom-dwellers or large fish that may see them as prey.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5 to 10 years.
