The Platinum Shortfin Molly with Black Eyes is a peaceful, selectively bred variation of the standard molly fish (Poecilia sphenops). These hardy and active livebearers are known for their pearlescent, silver-white body and striking black eyes, which add to their unique appearance. They are a good choice for beginners in community aquariums, provided their specific water needs are met.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a school of mollies. A larger tank, such as 30 gallons or more, is even better for maintaining stable water quality and preventing overcrowding.
  • Decor: A planted tank is ideal, as mollies enjoy exploring among vegetation. Include plenty of live plants, such as Java Fern and Anubias, to provide hiding spots and security. A dark substrate can help their platinum color stand out.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter, is recommended. A strong current can stress the fish or damage their fins.
  • Maintenance: These fish are sensitive to fluctuating water conditions, so a mature, cycled tank is best. Perform regular, partial water changes (25% weekly) to maintain pristine water quality.
  • Lid: A secure lid is necessary, as mollies are known jumpers.

Water parameters
Platinum Shortfin Mollies thrive in stable, hard, and slightly alkaline water, which enhances their health and color.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 7.5–8.5
Hardness (GH/KH) 10–25 dGH (moderately hard to hard)

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, they need a varied diet that includes both meaty and plant-based foods.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times daily, only as much as they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Platinum Shortfin Mollies are peaceful, active, and social fish. It is recommended to keep a group of at least 4–6 individuals, with a ratio of two to three females for every male to prevent male harassment.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly sized fish that prefer similar water conditions.
    • Peaceful fish: Corydoras catfish, mollies, platies, and peaceful tetras.
    • Invertebrates: They can coexist with larger invertebrates like Nerite snails and Amano shrimp. However, they may eat smaller shrimp fry.
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers and will breed readily. Providing dense plants offers cover for new fry.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live for 3 to 5 years
