The Albino Pure Black Diamond Stingray (Potamotrygon leopoldi) is an advanced-level freshwater fish native to the Xingu River basin of Brazil. They are prized for their contrasting deep black body and vibrant white or yellowish spots and are known for their intelligence and personality. Owning a pure Black Diamond is a long-term commitment that requires a large aquarium, pristine water conditions, and a specialized diet

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 180 gallons is required for a single adult, with a wide footprint (at least 8 feet long and 3 feet deep) being more important than height.
  • Substrate: Use a fine, soft sand substrate to protect their delicate underside. Avoid gravel, which can cause injury and infection.
  • Filtration: A powerful, oversized biological filtration system is essential to handle their heavy bioload and maintain pristine water quality.
  • Decor: Minimal decor is best to maximize open swimming and foraging space. Any driftwood or rocks should be smooth and secure.
  • Lighting: Subdued lighting is preferred, as they are not used to bright light.
  • Lid: A tight-fitting, weighted lid is mandatory, as these rays are known to jump out of their tanks.

Water parameters
Black Diamond Stingrays are extremely sensitive to water quality, especially to nitrogenous waste products.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 78–84°F (25–29°C)
pH 6.5–7.5
Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm (non-detectable)
Nitrate Below 10–20 ppm is preferred
  • Maintenance: Expect large, weekly water changes of 25–50% due to their high waste output and sensitivity.

Diet and feeding
Black Diamond Stingrays are carnivores and require a varied, protein-rich diet.
  • Primary foods: A combination of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, shrimp, earthworms, bloodworms, and pieces of fish or silversides.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed 1–3 times per day, depending on the ray's age and size. Promptly remove any uneaten food.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Black Diamond Stingrays are generally peaceful but predatory. They are surprisingly intelligent and can recognize their owners.
  • Tank Mates: Choose large, peaceful, mid- to upper-water column fish that will not be eaten or harass the ray.
    • Good companions: Arowanas, datnoids, large silver dollars, and bichirs.
    • Avoid: Aggressive or fin-nipping fish, small fish that can be eaten, and suckermouth catfish (like plecos) that may rasp at the ray's body.
  • Defense: Handle with extreme caution. The venomous barb on their tail is used for defense and can inflict painful wounds. Do not net or handle the ray directly. If stung, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 15–20 years or more.
