The Red Rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus), also known as the Salmon Red Rainbowfish, is a vibrant, active, schooling fish native to Lake Sentani in New Guinea. Males develop a striking red-orange coloration and a high, deep body shape with age, while females are more an olive-brown with a golden sheen.

Tank Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of a 55-gallon aquarium, preferably a long tank (4 feet or more), is essential for a group of these active, heavy-bodied fish. They need ample horizontal space to swim.
  • Decor: They thrive in well-planted aquariums, which provide cover and security. Use plants that tolerate hard water. Ensure a balance between dense vegetation (especially along the back and sides) and open swimming areas.
  • Filtration: A strong and efficient filtration system is necessary to maintain pristine water quality. They are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes, so a fully cycled and mature tank is required.
  • Maintenance: Regular weekly water changes of 25-30% are crucial. A tight-fitting lid is a must, as they are known to jump.

Water Parameters
Red Rainbowfish are adaptable to a range of conditions but do best in stable, slightly alkaline, and hard water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–78°F (22–26°C)
pH 7.0–8.0 (slightly alkaline)
Hardness (GH/KH) Moderate to Hard (10–20 dGH)

Diet and Feeding
They are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet to ensure optimal health and color. Their mouth is relatively small, so provide appropriate food sizes.
  • Staple: High-quality flake, granule, or small pellet foods.
  • Supplement: Offer live or frozen foods regularly, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mysis shrimp.
  • Vegetable Matter: Algae and spirulina-based foods should be included in their diet.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times a day.

Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, active, and social fish. They must be kept in groups of at least six individuals to thrive and reduce stress. Keeping a ratio of more females than males (e.g., 2 females to 1 male) will encourage males to display their best colors without excessive aggression.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other similarly sized, peaceful fish like other rainbowfish species, larger tetras, danios, peaceful barbs, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid very small fish that could be eaten or slow-moving species that may be stressed by the Red Rainbowfish's activity.

Lifespan
With proper care and optimal water conditions, they can live for 6 to 8 years.
