Tank setup
- Tank size: Speckled Pavons can reach over 3 feet in the wild, and up to 26 inches in captivity, with some large specimens exceeding that. A single adult requires a tank of at least 300 to 500+ gallons, with ample length and width for open swimming space.
- Filtration: This species is a messy eater with a heavy bioload, necessitating powerful, high-capacity filtration. A sump system or multiple canister filters are recommended to keep the water pristine.
- Substrate: Use fine sand or keep the tank bare-bottomed. The pavon's hunting behavior and large size make other substrates less suitable.
- Decorations: Keep decor to a minimum to maximize open swimming area. Use large, secure pieces of driftwood or rocks that cannot be easily moved or knocked over by this powerful fish.
- Cover: These fish are known to be powerful jumpers. A heavy-duty, tight-fitting, and secure lid is essential to prevent them from escaping.
Water parameters
Maintaining stable and excellent water quality is crucial for the health of Speckled Pavons.
- Temperature: Maintain a stable tropical temperature of 78–86°F.
- pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0–7.5 is ideal.
- Water changes: Frequent and large water changes (e.g., 40–50% weekly) are necessary to control nitrates and other dissolved metabolites.
Diet and feeding
Speckled Pavons are voracious carnivores and aggressive predators in their natural habitat.
-
Food types: A varied, high-protein diet is required. Offer meaty foods like:
- Whole fish (smelt, tilapia)
- Shrimp
- Krill
- Mussels
- Feeding frequency: Feed juveniles daily and adults two to three times per week. It is recommended to wean them off live feeders to a frozen or pellet-based diet to prevent disease and provide balanced nutrition.
Temperament and tank mates
- Temperament: Speckled Pavons are aggressive and predatory, especially toward fish small enough to be considered prey. They can also be territorial and belligerent toward other large fish.
-
Tank mates: Because of their predatory nature, they are often best kept in a species-only tank. If housing with others, choose only large, robust, and fast-swimming species. Suitable companions might include:
- Arowanas
- Stingrays
- Other large catfish
- Compatibility notes: Even with suitable tank mates, be prepared for potential aggression, as C. temensis is known to be one of the more aggressive peacock bass species
