The Super Red Dragon (SRD) Flowerhorn is a captive-bred hybrid cichlid prized for its vibrant red coloration and prominent nuchal hump, or "kok". Known for their bold and interactive personalities, SRD Flowerhorns require specific care to thrive. Due to their aggressive and territorial nature, they are best housed alone.

Tank setup
  • Tank size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a single adult SRD Flowerhorn, but a 125-gallon tank is ideal. Larger tanks offer more territory and contribute to better water stability.
  • Filtration: A powerful, high-capacity filter is essential to handle the significant waste produced by this large cichlid. Canister filters are often the best choice for providing strong biological and mechanical filtration.
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel is best, as Flowerhorns enjoy digging. A soft substrate prevents them from injuring their sensitive mouths and heads while "rearranging" the tank.
  • Decorations: Include large, sturdy decorations like driftwood and rocks to provide hiding spots and visual breaks. Ensure all decor is heavy and stable, as Flowerhorns can be strong enough to move lighter items.
  • Lid: A tight-fitting, secure lid is crucial, as these fish are powerful jumpers, especially when stressed.

Water parameters
Maintaining stable and pristine water quality is vital for the SRD Flowerhorn's health and color.
  • Temperature: 80–86°F (26–30°C).
  • pH: 7.4–8.0.
  • Water changes: Perform regular, large water changes (30–50% weekly) to keep nitrate levels low.

Diet and feeding
SRD Flowerhorns are omnivores with a hearty appetite. A varied, high-protein diet is necessary for their vibrant colors and overall health.
  • Pellets: A high-quality Flowerhorn-specific pellet should form the basis of their diet.
  • Supplements: Offer a variety of frozen or live foods, such as krill, shrimp, bloodworms, and earthworms.
  • Vegetables: Occasional vegetable matter, like blanched spinach or peas, aids in digestion.
  • Frequency: Feed adults two to three times a day, only giving them what they can consume in a few minutes to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Temperament and tank mates
  • Temperament: SRD Flowerhorns are known for being aggressive, territorial, and interactive with their owners. They may recognize and respond to their keeper's presence, often developing a "water dog" personality.
  • Tank mates: It is highly recommended to keep a Flowerhorn alone. Their size, territorial nature, and aggression make them a threat to most other fish. If you must attempt tank mates, only consider large, robust, and equally aggressive species such as large plecos, arowanas, or other big cichlids, and be prepared for potential aggression.

Common health problems
  • Hole-in-the-Head disease: This is often caused by poor water quality and a lack of vitamins in the diet.
  • Swim bladder issues: Due to selective breeding, Flowerhorns can be prone to buoyancy problems. Symptoms include unusual swimming patterns and difficulty staying upright.
  • Stress: Sudden changes in water parameters, bullying, or an inadequate environment can lead to stress, which can weaken the fish's immune system and make it susceptible to disease.
