The White Polar Parrot Cichlid is a hybrid freshwater fish known for its distinctive rounded, "parrot" shape and striking, pearlescent white coloration. While the exact parentage is debated, it is widely believed to be a cross between the Blood Parrot Cichlid and the Convict Cichlid. White Polar Parrots are semi-aggressive but are generally less hostile and more interactive than other cichlids.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a single White Polar Parrot, with a 55-gallon or larger tank being better for a group.
  • Decor: Provide plenty of secure hiding spots using rocks, caves, and driftwood. They enjoy digging, so a soft sand or fine gravel substrate is best.
  • Filtration: A strong filtration system is necessary, as they can be messy eaters and produce a lot of waste. Moderate water flow is generally preferred.
  • Maintenance: These fish need pristine water conditions. Perform regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly) to manage nitrates and other waste.
  • Lid: A secure lid is essential, as cichlids are known to jump.

Water parameters
White Polar Parrots are adaptable but prefer stable, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 75–82°F (24–28°C)
pH 6.5–7.5
Hardness (GH/KH) 6–20 dGH (soft to moderately hard)

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, they require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and coloration.
  • Staple: High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes.
  • Supplement: Offer frozen or live foods regularly, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, or mysis shrimp.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts one to two times daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. However, they are generally less aggressive than purebred Convict Cichlids and can be housed in community tanks with appropriate tank mates.
  • Tank Mates: Choose robust, similarly-sized, or semi-aggressive fish that can tolerate their assertive nature. Avoid small, delicate, or long-finned species that could be bullied.
    • Suitable fish: Other parrot cichlids, larger tetras, barbs, Angelfish, and larger catfish like Plecos or Corydoras.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 8 to 12 years.
