The red wagtail balloon platy is a peaceful, hardy, and easy-to-care-for freshwater fish, making it an excellent choice for beginner and experienced aquarists. They are known for their rounded "balloon" body shape, bright red/orange body, and black fins.

Tank Requirements
  • Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of a 10-gallon aquarium is recommended, though a larger tank is better due to their active nature and breeding habits.
  • Water Parameters: They are highly adaptable to a range of conditions but prefer a slightly alkaline environment.
    • Temperature: 64° to 78°F (18° to 26°C) is the general range, with some sources recommending up to 82°F.
    • pH: Ideally between 7.0 and 8.2.
    • Hardness: They thrive in medium to hard water (10-28 dGH).
  • Filtration: A good filtration system (e.g., a hang-on-back or sponge filter) is crucial for maintaining clean water. Ensure the filter intake is covered with a pre-filter sponge if you have fry in the tank.
  • Decor: The tank should have a mix of open swimming areas and ample hiding spots, using live plants (like Java moss, anacharis, or hornwort), rocks, or driftwood. A secure lid is recommended as platies may jump.
  • Social Behavior: They are social fish and do well in groups. Maintain a ratio of at least two to three females per male to prevent the males from over-harassing a single female.

Diet and Feeding
Red wagtail balloon platies are omnivores and will readily eat most aquarium foods. A varied diet ensures optimal health and vibrant colors.
  • Staple Foods: High-quality flake or pellet food should be the primary diet.
  • Supplements: Supplement their diet with both protein and vegetable matter.
    • Protein: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia.
    • Vegetables: They enjoy grazing on algae and can be fed blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or cucumber.
  • Frequency: Feed adults once or twice daily, only an amount they can consume within 2-3 minutes to avoid overfeeding. Juveniles need 2-3 small meals per day.

Compatibility and Breeding
  • Tank Mates: They are peaceful community fish and coexist well with other non-aggressive species of similar size, such as guppies, mollies, small tetras, rasboras, and corydoras catfish.
  • Breeding: Platies are livebearers and breed very easily. A female can give birth to 10 to 40 live fry every four to six weeks. Adults may eat the fry, so provide plenty of dense plant cover for the babies to hide, or move the pregnant female to a separate breeding tank to increase fry survival rates
