Telescope eye goldfish are a fragile, slow-swimming fancy variety requiring specialized care due to their protruding eyes and compact bodies. They are not ideal for beginner hobbyists. 

Tank Requirements & Setup
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons for the first fish is recommended, with an additional 10 gallons for each subsequent telescope eye goldfish. A larger tank (e.g., 40-50 gallons) is better for long-term health and stability.
  • Filtration & Aeration: Use robust filtration (e.g., a canister filter) to handle their high waste production, aiming for a flow rate of at least four times the tank's volume per hour. Ensure adequate aeration with an air pump and air stone, as fancy goldfish have high oxygen demands.
  • Decorations & Substrate: Avoid any sharp or abrasive decorations, plants, or rocks that could damage their delicate eyes. Smooth river pebbles, large gravel (too big to swallow), or fine sand are safer substrate options. Live plants like Anubias and Java fern, which are hardier, can be used, but the fish may still nibble on them.
  • Lighting: Do not place the tank in direct sunlight or strong artificial light to prevent rapid algae blooms and temperature fluctuations. 

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: Telescope eyes are cool-water fish, preferring temperatures between 65–75°F (18–24°C).
  • pH: Maintain a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5.
  • Water Quality: Essential for their health. Ammonia and nitrites should be at 0 ppm, and nitrates should be kept below 20 ppm. Perform regular water changes of 25-50% every one to two weeks, treating all new tap water with a water conditioner. 

Diet & Feeding
  • Sinking Food is Key: To prevent them from gulping air at the surface (which can lead to swim bladder problems), feed high-quality, sinking pellets or gel food.
  • Varied Diet: Supplement their diet with a variety of blanched vegetables (like peas with skin removed, spinach, or broccoli) and frozen or live meaty foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
  • Frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times a day, only what they can consume within a few minutes. 

Compatibility
  • Tank Mates: Telescope eyes are slow swimmers with poor vision and should only be kept with other similarly disadvantaged, slow-moving fancy goldfish, such as Orandas, Bubble Eyes, Celestial Eyes, or other Fantails.
  • Avoid: Never house them with fast-swimming, single-tailed varieties like Common or Comet goldfish, as the faster fish will outcompete them for food and may accidentally injure their eyes.
