The MBU puffer (Tetraodon mbu), also known as the giant freshwater puffer, is the largest species of freshwater pufferfish. Originating from the Congo River basin in Africa, it is a highly intelligent and personable fish that requires a massive, long-term commitment from an experienced aquarist.

Appearance and size
  • Size: MBU puffers can reach impressive sizes, often growing to 24 inches or more in captivity.
  • Coloration: Their bodies feature a beautiful labyrinth-like or maze pattern of dark rings over a golden or yellowish base. This pattern is unique to each individual.
  • Unique traits:

Like all puffers, they can inflate their bodies with water or air when threatened. They also have a fused beak-like mouth and continually growing teeth.

Care and tank setup
Due to their massive adult size and sensitivity to water quality, MBU puffers are unsuitable for most home aquariums.
  • Tank size: A minimum of a 300-gallon tank is recommended, but many experienced keepers suggest 500 to 1,000 gallons for a fully grown adult. The tank's footprint is more important than its height.
  • Water parameters: They are highly sensitive to poor water quality and require pristine, stable conditions.
    • Temperature:

      75–82°F (24–28°C).
    • pH: 7.0–8.0.
    • Filtration: A powerful filtration system and large, weekly water changes are essential to manage their high bio-load.
  • Aquascaping:

A soft, sandy substrate is necessary to protect their delicate underbelly. The tank should also have smooth rocks and driftwood, with plenty of open swimming space.
  • Enrichment: MBU puffers are intelligent and can become destructive when bored. Providing environmental complexity, varied water flow, and interaction with their owner is crucial for their welfare.

Diet and feeding
  • Diet: MBU puffers are molluscivores, feeding primarily on hard-shelled prey like crabs, snails, and mussels. This is essential for naturally wearing down their teeth, which grow continuously.
  • Recommended foods: Offer a varied diet of:
    • Hard-shelled snails, clams, and mussels

      .
    • Crabs, crayfish, and shrimp.
    • Earthworms.
    • Softer foods like fish fillets can be used as a supplement.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: MBU puffers are generally intolerant of other fish and can inflict serious injury with their powerful beaks. They are best kept in a species-only tank.
  • Interaction: Despite their aggression, they can be highly interactive and intelligent, capable of recognizing their owners.
  • Tank mates:

If housing with other fish is attempted, it requires a massive tank and very careful selection of fast-swimming, robust species. Other puffers should never be housed with them.
