The Blue Dragon Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a visually stunning, tank-bred variety known for its vibrant, metallic blue body and "dragon-scale" pattern along its flanks. Male guppies often feature deeper sapphire tails and striking finnage. These are active, social, and peaceful fish, making them a popular and excellent choice for community aquariums and breeders.

Tank requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group, but a larger tank of 20 gallons or more is recommended for these active swimmers and for accommodating their potential for breeding.
  • Decor: A planted tank is ideal, as guppies appreciate vegetation and benefit from hiding places, which also offer cover for fry. Live plants like Java Moss and Anubias, along with smooth hardscape like river stones or driftwood, are excellent choices.
  • Filtration: A gentle filter, such as a sponge filter, is recommended, as guppies do not like strong currents, which can stress them or damage their large fins.
  • Lid: A secure lid is essential, as guppies are known to jump.

Water parameters
Blue Dragon Guppies thrive in stable, hard, and slightly alkaline water, which enhances their health and coloration.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 6.8–8.0, with a target of 7.0–7.5
Hardness (GH/KH) 8–12 dGH (moderate to hard)

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, Blue Dragon Guppies require a varied diet for optimal health and vibrant color.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times daily, only as much as they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, active, and social fish, best kept in groups of six or more. It's recommended to maintain a ratio of 2–3 females for every male to prevent males from excessively harassing females.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly sized fish that won't nip at their long fins.
    • Peaceful fish: Corydoras catfish, mollies, platies, neon tetras, and harlequin rasboras.
    • Invertebrates: Larger invertebrates like Nerite snails and Amano shrimp are generally safe, but guppies may eat smaller shrimp fry.
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers and will breed readily. Providing dense plants offers cover for new fry.
  • Lifespan: With proper care and stable conditions, Blue Dragon Guppies typically live for 2 to 3 years
