The common name "Blue Neon African Cichlid" most likely refers to the Blue Neon Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara stuartgranti "Blue Neon"), a popular and vibrantly colored Lake Malawi cichlid. There is another fish sometimes called a "Blue Neon Cichlid" which is a species from Lake Tanganyika, the Paracyprichromis nigripinnis. The care for these two species differs significantly due to their different lake origins.
Lake Malawi:
Blue Neon Peacock Cichlid
(
Aulonocara stuartgranti
)
- Appearance: Males are an iridescent neon blue, while females are a duller gray.
- Tank size: A minimum of 55 gallons for a small group, with larger tanks being ideal for managing territorial aggression.
- Water parameters: High pH (7.8–8.6) and hard water are required to mimic their native Lake Malawi conditions.
- Substrate: Fine sand is the best substrate, as they are bottom-sifters.
- Decorations: Provide plenty of rocks, caves, and crevices to create territories and hiding places.
- Diet: As carnivores, they should be fed a high-quality carnivore pellet or flake, supplemented with frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
- Temperament: Considered semi-aggressive and best kept with other similarly sized and tempered Lake Malawi cichlids. Housing one male with multiple females is recommended to minimize aggression.
Lake Tanganyika: Blue Neon Cichlid (Paracyprichromis nigripinnis)
- Appearance: This species displays a base color that can be brick-red to bright red, with spaced neon-blue horizontal lines.
- Tank size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a group, with a fine sand substrate and vertical rock structures.
- Water parameters: Similar to Lake Malawi species, they require a high pH (7.5–9.0) and hard water.
- Substrate: Fine, light-colored sand is recommended to bring out their colors.
- Decorations: Provide rock structures with many caves and crevices, mimicking their natural environment where they live among vertical rock faces.
- Diet: They are carnivores, eating small invertebrates, so feed a high-quality carnivore flake and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
- Temperament: Considered extremely peaceful and should be kept in groups of 8–10.
Conclusion: Since the Peacock Cichlid is more widely known and sold, your fish is most likely the Lake Malawi species. Be sure to provide the proper tank setup and water parameters for that type of cichlid
