The Blue Polar Parrot Cichlid is a hybrid freshwater fish known for its distinctive, short body and vibrant, iridescent blue coloration. Its exact parentage is unconfirmed, but it is widely believed to be a cross between the Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) and the Blood Parrot Cichlid. They are relatively hardy, active, and intelligent fish, but they can be semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of a 30-gallon tank is recommended for a single Blue Polar Parrot, with a 50-gallon or larger tank advisable for a pair or group.
  • Decor: A sandy or fine gravel substrate is best, as they enjoy digging. Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers using caves, rocks, and driftwood to establish territories and reduce aggression.
  • Filtration: A strong filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality, but ensure the current is not too strong.
  • Lid: A secure lid is essential, as cichlids are known to jump.

Water parameters
They are adaptable but prefer stable, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 74–82°F (23–28°C)
pH 6.5–7.5
Hardness (GH) Soft to moderately hard
  • Maintenance: Regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly) are essential to prevent the buildup of nitrates and other waste.

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, they require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration.
  • Staple: High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes.
  • Supplement: Offer frozen or live foods regularly, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts one to two times daily.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly when breeding. However, they are generally more peaceful than purebred Convict Cichlids.
  • Tank Mates: Choose similarly-sized, robust, or semi-aggressive fish. Avoid small, delicate, or long-finned species.
    • Suitable fish: Other medium-sized cichlids (e.g., Blood Parrot Cichlids, Firemouths), larger tetras, robust loaches, and catfish (e.g., Corydoras, Plecos).
  • Breeding: They are egg layers and relatively easy to breed. Both parents will fiercely guard their eggs and fry.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5–15 years.
