The Blue Tarzan Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a popular and hardy freshwater fish known for its striking coloration and peaceful nature. A selectively bred fancy guppy, the Blue Tarzan typically features a bold, deep blue body with intricate patterns and flowing, fan-like fins, especially prominent in males.

Tank Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group, but a 20-gallon or larger tank is better, as these energetic swimmers utilize the middle and top of the aquarium.
  • Decor: A planted tank is ideal. A mix of open swimming areas and plenty of live plants, like Java Moss, Anubias, and Water Lettuce, offers hiding places and security.
  • Filtration: A gentle filter, such as a sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with a baffle, is recommended. Guppies prefer slow to moderate water movement. A filter intake guard is essential to protect fry.
  • Lid: Guppies are known jumpers, so a secure lid is a must.

Water Parameters
Fancy guppies are less resilient than their wild counterparts and thrive in stable, clean water with higher hardness and pH levels.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C), with 76–78°F (24–25°C) being optimal.
pH 6.8–8.0, with a slightly alkaline pH of 7.2–7.5 being ideal.
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred to support health and color.

Diet and Feeding
As omnivores, Blue Tarzan Guppies require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and coloration.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food formulated for small tropical fish.
  • Supplement: Offer live or frozen foods regularly, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  • Vegetable Matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small portions two to three times per day, giving them only what they can eat in a few minutes.

Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Temperament: Blue Tarzan Guppies are peaceful and active. To prevent males from over-harassing females, it's best to keep a ratio of 2–3 females for every male.
  • Tank Mates: They are excellent for community tanks with other similarly sized, peaceful fish like Corydoras catfish, mollies, and tetras. Avoid aggressive species that might nip their fins or outcompete them for food.
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers, and a mix of males and females will readily breed. To protect fry from being eaten by adults, provide dense plants for cover.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, Blue Tarzan Guppies typically live for 2 to 3 years.
