The Full Red Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a popular and hardy freshwater fish known for its intense, uniform red coloring across its entire body and fins. They are peaceful, active, and social, making them an excellent choice for beginners and community aquariums.

Tank Requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of a 10-gallon aquarium is recommended for a small group of six guppies, but a 20-gallon or larger tank is better for providing ample swimming space and accommodating their potential breeding.
  • Decor: They thrive in well-planted tanks with plenty of live plants (e.g., Java Moss, Anubias) and decorations that provide hiding spots and security. A dark substrate can help make their vibrant red colors stand out.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter, is ideal. Strong currents can stress the fish or damage their fins.
  • Lid: A secure lid is necessary, as guppies are known jumpers.

Water Parameters
Full Red Guppies are adaptable but prefer stable, clean water with higher hardness and pH levels.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 6.8–8.0 (slightly alkaline is optimal)
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (hard water) is preferred

Diet and Feeding
As omnivores, Full Red Guppies require a varied diet for optimal health and coloration.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food is best, as their mouth is relatively small.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable Matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small amounts two to three times per day, ensuring they consume it all within a few minutes to prevent overfeeding.

Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, active, and social fish. It is recommended to keep a ratio of 2–3 females for every male to prevent males from excessively harassing females.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly sized fish that won't nip at their fins, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Mollies and platies
    • Neon tetras and harlequin rasboras
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers. Providing dense plants or a breeder box offers cover for new fry, which the adults may otherwise eat.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live for 2 to 3 years.
