Jade green shrimp, more commonly known as Green Jade Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi 'Green Jade'), are a captivating variant of freshwater dwarf shrimp. Bred from the same lineage as cherry shrimp, they are known for their vibrant, solid green coloration, and are a popular addition to planted tanks. Like other Neocaridina varieties, they are relatively hardy and suitable for beginner aquarists.
Appearance
- Coloration: Green Jade Shrimp display a deep, uniform green hue across their bodies. This is the result of selective breeding from chocolate-colored shrimp. The intensity of their color can vary depending on diet, genetics, and stress levels.
- Size: Adults grow to about 1 to 1.5 inches in length.
- Grading: As with other ornamental shrimp, color intensity and opacity are used for grading. Higher-grade individuals have a more vibrant and opaque green color with no clear patches.
- Orange Eye Variant: Some breeders have created an Orange Eye (OE) Green Jade variant, which features bright orange eyes that contrast with the green body.
Care and tank setup
Green Jade Shrimp are generally easy to care for, thriving in stable water conditions that are similar to those suitable for cherry shrimp.
- Tank size: A 5- to 10-gallon tank is a good starting point for a colony, as it offers more stability for water parameters.
-
Water parameters: They can tolerate a wide range of conditions, but stability is key.
- Temperature: 64–86°F (18–30°C)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Hardness: They do well in moderate to hard water, which provides the minerals needed for healthy molting.
- Aquascaping: A heavily planted tank with plenty of moss, driftwood, and leaf litter provides hiding places and surfaces for grazing. A dark substrate is often used to make their green color more prominent.
- Filtration: A sponge filter is recommended to prevent tiny shrimp (shrimplets) from being sucked into the intake.
- Feeding: They are omnivores that primarily graze on algae and biofilm. Supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.
Breeding
Green Jade Shrimp are prolific breeders in a well-maintained and stable aquarium.
- Process: Females carry eggs ("berried") for about 30 days before they hatch into miniature versions of the adults.
- Maintaining Color: Unlike some other color morphs, Green Jade Shrimp may not always breed true. To maintain the vibrant green color, selective breeding and culling of shrimp with less desirable coloration are necessary.
Tank mates
- Compatible Inhabitants: Green Jade Shrimp are peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive, small fish and invertebrates. Small, peaceful fish like chili rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and some small tetras can be good tank mates.
- Incompatible Tank Mates: Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish, as they may prey on the shrimp. They should not be kept with other Neocaridina species, as interbreeding will result in wild-type offspring with dull, brownish coloration.
