Ludwigia peruensis, also known as Red Star Ludwigia or Diamond Ludwigia, is a striking freshwater aquatic stem plant valued for its intense red to purple coloration. It is often correctly identified as Ludwigia glandulosa, which is native to the wetlands of the southeastern United States.
Care requirements
This is a demanding plant that requires specific conditions to achieve its maximum color and growth potential. It is not recommended for "low-tech" or beginner aquariums.
- Lighting: High-intensity lighting is crucial for developing and maintaining its rich red coloration. In lower light, the plant will appear more green or olive.
- CO2: CO2 injection at 20–30 ppm is highly recommended for optimal growth and color vibrancy.
- Fertilization: A nutrient-rich substrate, such as a planted aquarium soil, is essential for root development. Regular dosing of liquid fertilizers, especially those with iron and micronutrients, is vital to prevent pale or yellowing leaves.
- Water parameters: It prefers soft to moderately hard water and a temperature range of 72–82°F (22–28°C).
- Propagation: This plant propagates easily by taking cuttings. Simply trim a stem and replant it in the substrate, ensuring there are a few nodes (where leaves connect to the stem).
Placement in the aquascape
- Positioning: Ludwigia peruensis is a stem plant that grows tall, making it best suited for the midground or background of the aquarium.
- Grouping: For the best visual impact, plant several stems together in a group.
- Trimming: Regular trimming will encourage the plant to grow bushier and more compact.
