The Maccullochi Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia maccullochi) is a smaller, active fish perfect for community aquariums. It is less demanding regarding water chemistry than many other rainbowfish, making it a good choice for beginners.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a school of 6–8 fish.
- Decor: They do best in a planted tank with plenty of driftwood, rocks, and areas for hiding. Floating plants can help diffuse light.
- Filtration: A good filtration system that provides moderate water flow and excellent water quality is essential.
- Maintenance: Regular partial water changes are crucial for a healthy environment.
Water Parameters
Maccullochi Rainbowfish can tolerate a wide range of water conditions but are sensitive to abrupt changes.
- Temperature: 73–82°F (23–28°C).
- pH: 5.5–7.5.
- Hardness (GH): 8–15 dKH is suitable.
Diet and Feeding
These omnivores are not picky eaters but benefit from a varied diet.
- Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
- Supplement: Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
- Note: Their mouth is relatively small, so provide smaller foods.
Behavior and Tank Mates
- Temperament: A peaceful, schooling fish. Keep them in groups of at least 6 to ensure their well-being and encourage vibrant colors. A higher ratio of females to males can reduce squabbling between males.
- Tank Mates: They get along well with other peaceful, similarly sized fish like danios, rasboras, and Corydoras catfish. While they won't harm adult dwarf shrimp, they may eat the fry.
Lifespan
With proper care, they can live for 5 to 8 years in an aquarium
